QUAUGLYPH

The project QUAUGLYPH is a part of project QUAU, wich means STONE & LIGTH and STONE & SOUND. I started to work and show in 1983 at Gallery Daily Planet (Tokyo). The QUAU pronunciation is also my own. Since 1987, I have been working with photographer Kiyoshi Tatsukawa lives in Tokyo,to develope project ( QUAU in Photo), and now having a new show in Tokyo .The project (QUAUGLYPH) was long time in my mind. In 1997 February I started to work on this new project .

When I got interest on stone spark was in 1968, during my postgraduate Sculpture Course, for 2 years, I was carving stone only. After all other students left school, most of school light were off and I saw the sparks were coming in view. I was enjoying the beauty only. I left Japan in 1970 for Europe. Since 1971,I started to live and work in a small town, Kilchenlamitz near Hof in Bayern, carving granite at a quary. After 5 o'clock I was left alone in the quary, and enjoying the echo & spark from each hit, then got the original idea to create new media of stone sculpture using Sparks, Sound, Gravel, etc. which was considered as waste for making a Sculpture.I believe, the remained sculpture and the waste has similar meaning or value in Universe. Since then I have been creating and exhibiting my idea in 3 dimensional forms, as well as Gravel, Sound,Sparks,etc.

Each spark carries my messages already & the remained marks on stone surface too. The contemporary art fields are moving toward more & more megalomanic directions, but my approach is minimum scale to find who is myself and what I can do I have been trying to see if I exist or not .

I have been working as a stone carver and hitting stone so many times but non of each flying chip has same shape as well as the sparks. Now I want to create fixed letters can be used for communicating matter. The forms are from stone sparks & literal for any languages by it. I am thinking it can be developed, Pictographik, Ideographik and Phonographik letter .

The remained ditches can also be a sculpture to carry my message or combined together.

QUAUGLYPH means...

- creating a new Alphabet as a part of project QUAU

- hierographic letters of Stone Spark Image - Stone Spark Alphabet

- 26 letters like most of European Alphabets are

- with QUAUGLYPH, any languages can be literate

- few letters can be piled up as one (for example Japanese KANA letters can also be written compactly)

- numera' will be created "0" to "9" and any figures can be expressed by them

- some symbolic characters with fixed meaning through out any languages will be created (the part can be understood the meaning instantly visual way)

- QUAUGLYPH is letter of stone destruction

- each letter has a point to start - the point represent toutching point of chisel tip onto stone surface and also the "moment" that some intensive power (pressure) hit the material then a spark has broken out

- QUAUGLYPH has got Light & Sound, also Heat & Smell.

When I spoke "My recent project QUAU is creating a new Alphabet coming out of Stone Spark Images", some people said to me: "Why do we need more letters since we have enough of them ?"

Yes, we have many different letters to write down for our languages. But I believe letters as well as philosophy, ideology or religion can be held one each different from others.

Since I started for involving my work with India in 1978, I found the nation has so many different languages and writings. Some of small ethnic groups are also publishing own newspapers but some has no own letter and stay in underdeveloped situation as their choice.

There are 3 major religions, Hindhuism, Moslem and Christianity and also many other like Sihk, Buddhism, Jain etc. Sometime people kill each other because of disacceptance on differences.

It is still going on not only there but all over the world, although we are ready for rebuilding world more borderless way. But there are still some walls, ditches of ideology, religions or who is taking the initiative. Power of a nation should be left behind and individual persons should have own clear minds about they thinks, believes, holds up, follow or die for with full respect to the others. So I thought 'Why not having own Alphabet if there is certain concept behind.

Mankind has been marking onto some material to share certain information with others to communicate since our history started and it will kee on untill we all disappea.
